Dieter Moebius (one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany, part of Harmonia and Cluster) and Conny Plank (the most legendary sound engineer of the German Underground) made a congenial pair as musicians. An enigmatic form of pop music came into being on ’Rastakraut Pasta’, a breakneck, elegant mix of diverse elements: a touch of Krautrock, some avant. Watch the video for Rastakraut Pasta from Moebius & Plank’s Rastakraut Pasta for free, and see the artwork, lyrics and similar artists. This two-fer combines a pair of albums recorded by Moebius & Plank: 1979’s Rastakraut Pasta and 1981’s Material. On the former, languid drum machines frame several interesting exercises in alien pop, from the vocoder experimentation on ’News’ and ’Missi Cacadou’ to the title track’s hilarious fusion of reggae and Krautrock.Can. Material is the second full-length album by German electronic music duo of Dieter Moebius and Conny Plank. Material was recorded in July 1981 at Conny’s Studio outside of Cologne. It was released by Sky Records in 1981.Steven and Alan Freeman, writing in The Crack In The Cosmic Egg describe Material and the 1980 Moebius & Plank debut album Rastakraut Pasta, in part, this way: ’Their early albums as a duo were revelations of innovation, bringing unlikely combinations of industrial rock, cosmic and even dub music (on Rastakraut Pasta) together in a hybrid of genres. A reborn spirit of Krautrock that played recklessly with offbeat forms...’ The incessant, forceful beat on ’Conditionierer’, the opening track of Material, could easily have been suitable for club dance music if not for all the odd electronic sounds added on top.
Both Rastakraut Pasta and Material were reissued in their entirety on a single CD on the AmericanGyroscope label on April 16, 1996, marking the first U.S. release for both albums. Material was reissued separately on CD in a digitally remastered, 1000 copy limited edition by the JapaneseCaptain Trip label on February 25, 2007.Track listing[edit]

Though he was an unofficial shadow member of Krautrock pioneers Cluster throughout the ‘70s--first as performer and later as producer--Conny Plank rarely stepped out from behind the desk save for a handful of ‘80s albums with full-time Cluster member, Dieter Moebius. RASTAKRAUT PASTA (1980), the first of five collaborations with Moebius, cements the duo as proto-electronica innovators par excellence. Taking a quirky, dub reggae-inspired detour from Cluster’s usual ambient leanings, the album runs the gambit from dubbed-out electroacoustic experiments (“Solar Plexus”) to pastoral Eno-esque pop (“Two Oldtimers”) to quietistic industrial chug (“News”).
